Hazard Perception Test: Free Practice Guide & Tips

The Hazard Perception Test is the second part of your driving theory hazard perception exam. Unlike the multiple-choice section, this tests your ability to spot developing dangers on the road in real-time. Many learners fail this section simply because they don’t understand how the scoring works. This guide covers everything you need to know to score high, including how to click, scoring windows, and free practice clips.

What is the Hazard Perception Test?

You will be shown 14 free hazard perception clips filmed from the perspective of a car driver. In each clip, there is at least one “developing hazard”—something that would cause you to change speed or direction (like a car pulling out or a pedestrian stepping off the curb). One of the clips will have two hazards. Your job is to click the mouse as soon as you see the hazard developing.

How is the Hazard Perception Scoring Calculated?

The earlier you notice the hazard, the higher your score.

  • 5 points: If you click just as the hazard begins to develop.

  • 4-1 points: If you click slightly later.

  • 0 points: If you miss the hazard or click too late.

  • 0 points (Disqualified): If you click repeatedly in a pattern or just click everything randomly, the system will detect “cheating” and give you zero for that clip.

Hazard Perception Pass Mark: You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass.
